W3C history: follow the institutions behind web standards

W3C's history page provides an institutional account of the World Wide Web Consortium and links to earlier web material, anniversary resources and news archives. It is useful when a technical feature is described as if it appeared without a process, community or maintenance responsibility behind it. Start with a standard or design question, then place it in the relevant organizational period. Follow links to the actual specification or announcement and record its publication status. Distinguish the history of the consortium from the history of every browser implementation, commercial product and user practice that developed alongside it. An organization's own history explains its role but is not a complete account of the web. It may emphasize successful milestones more than disagreements or abandoned proposals. Compare the overview with working documents, release notes and other participants' records when your question requires those details. Use the page as a map to primary material, and cite the more specific document for claims about a particular feature or decision.
