Flickr Commons: recover context around historical photographs

Flickr Commons provides access to photography collections shared by cultural institutions. Its programme also invites public contributions of information and knowledge, making it useful for studying how an image's description develops as people identify places, people or details that were previously uncertain. Start with a participating institution rather than an isolated repost. Read the photograph's caption and collection context, follow any link to the institutional catalogue, and inspect related images. If a comment offers an identification, record it as a lead and look for supporting evidence before incorporating it into your own description. Keep the photograph's identifier and source URL with every saved copy. Public discussion can enrich an archive, but a confident comment is not automatically a verified fact. Likewise, the age of a photograph does not by itself settle all reuse questions. Consult the rights information associated with the item and institution. Distinguish the date of the photographed event, the photographic print and the later online upload.
