Wikimedia Commons: reuse images with their provenance
Wikimedia Commons is useful for finding images whose file pages document a creator, source and reuse terms. The reuse guide explains why those details must travel with the image. It is a strong starting point for an illustrated archive when you are prepared to inspect each file rather than copy a search thumbnail. Open the original file description page. Record the creator, title or description, source, exact license and license link. Download the appropriate resolution and note any crop, colour change or other modification. Place a readable credit near the image or in an easily found attribution register, following the stated requirements. The uploader and creator may be different people. Commons also advises users to verify licensing information; a file page is not an unconditional guarantee. Other rights can matter depending on the material and use. Keep the source page URL and your review date so a later editor can retrace the decision and correct a mistaken attribution.
