DPLA: follow a national network to local collections
The Digital Public Library of America connects digital collections contributed through a network of cultural heritage institutions and regional hubs. Its partner directory is useful for discovering where material actually comes from and for finding local archives that a broad web search might overlook. Begin with a place, organization or historical topic, then follow the relevant hub or contributing institution. When you find an object, preserve both the discovery record and the holding institution's identifier. Compare the descriptions: the local catalogue may provide fuller dates, related material or information about the collection in which the object belongs. Use that context to refine your next search. Aggregated metadata is not identical to the underlying object, and collection coverage varies by institution and region. A missing result may reflect digitization or description gaps. Do not assume that online access grants unrestricted reuse. Read the item's rights information and retain the chain from discovery service to source institution in your research notes.
