Smithsonian Open Access: build with documented objects
Smithsonian Open Access is a starting point for finding reusable digital material from the institution's museums, libraries, archives and research collections. It also links to developer tools, 3D content and educational resources. It is particularly useful when a project needs a documented object rather than a generic decorative image. Search for an object connected to your argument, then inspect the full item record and its stated reuse status. Download a suitable file and retain the title, creator where known, institution, catalogue identifier and source URL. Write a caption that explains why the object belongs in your story, and distinguish a modern digital representation from the historical object itself. Open access does not make every interpretation accurate or every Smithsonian item interchangeable. Check the individual record and the programme's guidance before reuse. Some historical descriptions reflect the language and assumptions of their period. Preserve enough context for readers to understand the object while avoiding unsupported claims about the people or communities represented.
