Library of Congress web archives: study curated collections

The Library of Congress web archives organize selected websites into thematic and event-based collections. They are useful when you want a clearly described research collection rather than a search engine's most visible results. Collection context can help explain why particular sites were preserved together and which historical questions the selection supports. Read the collection description before opening individual captures. Note the subject boundaries, collection period and institutional context, then inspect several sites with different roles or viewpoints. Cite both the collection record and the specific archived page used for a claim. Keep the original URL and capture date in your notes. Selection is necessarily partial, and access conditions can differ between collections or items. A site absent from a collection should not be treated as historically unimportant. Preserved pages may also contain incomplete media or interactions. Combine the archive with other records and contemporary sources when reconstructing an event, especially when making claims about participation or public opinion.
