Common Crawl: research the web as a dataset

Common Crawl provides web crawl data and documentation for working with it. It is useful for questions about language, links or publication patterns across many pages, especially when you can describe the exact crawl and selection rules used. This is a research dataset workflow rather than a replacement for ordinary browsing. Start from one documented crawl and a narrowly scoped question. Identify a small sample, inspect the records, and write down the filters that selected it. Keep the crawl identifier and processing steps with your results so you can reproduce the analysis. Estimate storage and computing requirements before attempting a much larger extraction. A crawl is a sample of reachable web content, shaped by collection methods and timing. It does not represent all people, all languages, private communities or the entire web. Duplicate pages and missing context can distort simple counts. Check the relevant data documentation and usage conditions, and distinguish measurements of your sample from claims about the internet as a whole.
