Reverse image search

Reverse image search can locate reuse, similar scenes, and candidate source pages. It is useful for investigating a caption or finding a less-cropped version, but a visual match is a lead rather than a complete verification. Results depend on the service's index and matching behavior. Search the full image and a meaningful crop when appropriate, then open promising pages. Compare distinctive details and record dates, captions, and publisher information. The largest or earliest indexed result is not automatically the original. A failed search does not prove that an image is new, synthetic, or previously unpublished. Consider privacy before uploading sensitive material to an external service. Keep a short search log so another researcher can understand which versions and queries produced the candidates you used in your conclusion.
