Web snapshot

A snapshot preserves some version of a page or resource, but its completeness depends on the capture method. It may retain text while missing an interactive chart, an externally hosted video, or content loaded only after a particular action. A screenshot preserves appearance; it does not preserve the underlying site behavior. Record the original URL, capture URL or filename, capture time, method, and visible gaps. Open the saved representation and test the part needed for your claim. A snapshot can show what the capture contains without proving that every visitor saw the same page or that the page first existed at that time. In a citation, distinguish the source's publication date from the archive's capture date. This prevents a preservation event from becoming an invented historical milestone.

Context and provenance
