Attribution

Attribution answers who should receive credit and where a reader can find the material. Creative Commons recommends keeping title, author, source, and license information together when attributing licensed works. In practice, a credit should point to the particular item rather than merely to a large hosting website. Keep creator, uploader, photographer, translator, and editor as separate roles when they differ. If the credited name is a pseudonym, do not replace it with a guessed real identity. Record modifications beside a reused image so readers can tell what you changed. Attribution is not the same as permission: giving credit does not by itself establish that a use is allowed. It is also not proof of authorship when the credit itself is uncertain; preserve the source of the attribution claim.

Context and provenance

A credit that identifies a creator or source and makes the relationship inspectable.
