Provenance
Provenance records relationships between an object, the activities that affected it, and the people or systems responsible. For an archived image, that might include its creator, publication page, download, crop, and later caption. It helps a reader inspect how the current object relates to earlier material. Use a short chain: source file; action; resulting file; responsible person or tool; date; evidence. Mark an asserted step separately from one you directly observed. A detailed chain can still contain mistaken claims, so provenance supports evaluation rather than guaranteeing truth. In a research note, preserve the distinction between the original artifact and your interpretation of it. Missing links should remain visible: an unknown uploader is a gap to document, not a role to assign to the first account you found.
