Kickstarter invites audiences to help projects happen

Kickstarter launched on April 28, 2009, connecting creative proposals with people willing to help fund them.

Context and provenance

Kickstarter's official history dates its public launch to April 28, 2009. Co-founder Perry Chen traces the underlying idea to a concert that could not happen because the costs were too high. He imagined potential attendees pledging support so a project could proceed if enough people committed. The later platform organized that relationship across many kinds of creative work. The important historical distinction is between an audience responding to something already finished and an audience helping determine whether something gets made. A campaign therefore leaves more than a financial trace: its proposal, updates, and supporter relationships document how a creative possibility was presented before the finished object existed.

Why it matters

Crowdfunding makes an unrealized proposal a public cultural artifact. Campaigns preserve expectations, early choices, and audience participation that may be absent from the finished work's later presentation.
