Newgrounds automates its Portal

On April 6, 2000, Newgrounds introduced an automated Portal where people could upload creations without emailing them to the site's founder.

Context and provenance

Tom Fulp's twenty-fifth-anniversary account dates the automated Newgrounds Portal to April 6, 2000. Before that, people emailed their Flash files and updates for inclusion. As submissions grew, Fulp worked with a programmer known as Ross to automate the process. The resulting system combined immediate uploads with community voting and review. This is a concrete shift in the labor of running a creative venue: the founder no longer had to handle every incoming file individually. It also moved some decisions about visibility into a repeatable system involving users. The retrospective connects that change with later preservation challenges as browser support for Flash disappeared and alternatives became necessary.

Why it matters

Automated submission changed who could participate and how a creative archive grew. Its long history also exposes the dependence of cultural access on file formats and playback software.
