An ordinary zoo visit opens a video platform
The first YouTube upload, Me at the Zoo, appeared on April 23, 2005, with an unusually ordinary subject.
Context and provenance
YouTube's own tenth-anniversary account identifies Me at the Zoo as its first upload, dated April 23, 2005. The short recording at the San Diego Zoo concerned elephants, rather than a polished production or major public event. The company later used that modest beginning to illustrate a service where people could record and share themselves. The contrast matters when reading platform history: an artifact can become historically important because of its position in a system, not because its original subject was exceptional. Its later significance belongs partly to the platform that grew around it. The upload is a useful starting point for comparing personal recordings with professional online entertainment.
Why it matters
A casual recording became a recognizable origin marker. Preserving its date and platform context explains its historical role without pretending the footage itself predicted everything that followed.
