Reddit Place makes collaboration visible

A shared canvas turned tiny individual actions into negotiations over collective space.

Context and provenance

Reddit's r/place began in April 2017 as a shared canvas governed by a small set of rules. Participants could change individual pixels, then had to wait before placing another. Reddit's engineering account describes a 1000-by-1000 canvas with sixteen colors and explains how the service coordinated updates. These constraints are part of the cultural object: the image could not be made or defended in the same way as a drawing controlled by one artist. [1]

Reddit's subsequent retrospective describes the images, alliances and conflicts that emerged and links a released placement dataset. The final canvas is consequently only one possible representation of the event. Placement records and time-lapse reconstructions can show a picture appearing, being overwritten and being repaired. The platform's celebratory account is useful evidence of its framing, but it should not be mistaken for the experience of every participating group. [2]

The experiment returned in 2022. Reddit's account of that edition describes a larger event and reports its own activity measures. Those numbers belong to the 2022 edition; they should not be retroactively attached to the original canvas. Comparing editions requires attention to changes in scale, interface and participation rather than assuming that a familiar project name identifies an unchanged experiment. [3]

Editorial reading: a waiting period turns drawing into coordination. A person can make a mark, but sustaining a recognizable image often requires other people to place compatible marks over time. Repair becomes a creative activity because a pixel is never secure simply because it was placed once. This makes collaboration visible through repeated maintenance, not only through the moment when a design first appears.

The same mechanics can support competition. A border, logo or character claims space that another group may want to change. Alliances can make room for neighboring designs, while a large coordinated audience can overwhelm a smaller one. A final image records which marks remained at the selected endpoint, but it cannot by itself explain negotiation, pressure, humor or resentment among participants. A record that calls the result purely harmonious would discard much of what makes the experiment revealing.

Preservation therefore needs layers: a dated snapshot, the edition's rules, placement data where released, and selected public discussions with their contexts intact. A screenshot should state when it was captured. A time-lapse should disclose its sampling interval and any edits. A dataset can document actions without establishing each account's motive or proving that every action came from a distinct person. Missing or moderated material should not be silently reconstructed as fact.

The source pages linked here contain visual records of the canvas. This archive does not relabel the collective image as a freely licensed stock illustration merely because many people contributed to it. Authorship and reuse are different questions from access to a screenshot or data file. The dossier's focus is on how an interface made negotiation visible, while keeping the 2017 and 2022 events separate enough for readers to compare them responsibly.

Transmission timeline

  1. 2017-04-01

The first r/place edition opens with a shared pixel canvas.

  2. 2017-04

Reddit publishes engineering and retrospective accounts and releases placement data.

  3. 2022-04

The project returns as a separate edition with its own scale and reported activity.

Variants and adaptations

  • Timed canvas snapshot

One state of the image at a specified moment.

  • Time-lapse or heatmap

A derived visualization of change, dependent on sampling and processing choices.

  • Later edition

A new event using a related concept; its rules and data must be identified separately.

Why it matters

An editable shared surface makes cooperation, competition and repair visible; preserving the process reveals more than keeping only a final image.

What remains uncertain

Platform accounts are not independent evaluations of community experience. Dataset access does not prove unique human participation, motives, completeness, or unrestricted image-reuse rights.
