Keyboard Cat supplies the exit music

Old home footage became a modular ending for someone else's mishap.

Context and provenance

Charlie Schmidt filmed his cat Fatso appearing to play a keyboard in 1984, decades before the footage became a familiar online joke. After a digital upload, the material acquired a new role in 2009 when people appended it to other videos. The cat effectively played a failed performer off the stage, turning an awkward incident into a small comic production. The distinction between filming and meme dates matters: the original recording did not contain the later editing convention. Renewed circulation depended on people inventing a use for it. Once that function was established, editors could reuse the same ending across otherwise unrelated clips.

Why it matters

Remix can give archival material a new grammatical role. Keyboard Cat became a reusable punctuation mark: a musical signal that the preceding performance had reached its comic end and could now be dismissed.
