Yahoo Pipes goes read-only after eight years

TechCrunch reported on 4 June 2015 that Yahoo was shutting down Yahoo Pipes, the visual tool for aggregating, mashing up and filtering web data, which had launched in early 2007. Creation of new pipes would stop on 30 August 2015, and on 30 September the infrastructure would go read-only so developers could migrate their data. Pipes was part of a larger cull announced the same day: Yahoo Maps, the GeoPlanet and PlaceSpotter APIs and a number of regional properties. Yahoo said it needed to concentrate its resources on search, communications and digital content. The article added that Pipes had been used less each year. Users built pipes by dragging modules together and could save and share them as templates for others to remix, which the reporter compared to IFTTT's recipes.

Context and provenance

A pipe was a small program that lived on Yahoo's servers. When the servers stopped, every page or feed that fetched from a pipe stopped working too, even though the page itself was untouched. That is a different kind of loss from deleted content: the dependency broke.

When studying a site from that period, check whether its feeds came from a hosted tool, and record the date the tool went read-only.

To tell whether a feed or widget on an old page depended on Pipes, look for addresses on Yahoo's Pipes domain in the page source, and check a capture made before the August and September 2015 dates. A missing item after that period is consistent with, but does not prove, a broken pipe.

Why it matters

A hosted visual programming tool for the web ended, taking with it every feed that depended on it.

What remains uncertain

The source does not say when, or whether, Pipes servers were finally switched off.
