Yahoo retires its hand-built directory of the Web
On 26 September 2014 Yahoo said it would retire the Yahoo Directory at the end of the year, 31 December. Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land reported that Yahoo gave the news in a short paragraph headed 'Progress Report: Continued Product Focus', alongside two other closings, and that advertisers would be moved to a new service. Sullivan described the directory as compiled by hand and organised by topic. Yahoo had begun in 1994. In 2002, he wrote, Yahoo started showing Google's results as its main listings, which he identified as the start of the directory's decline, and he said it had been effectively dead for over a decade by the time it closed. He also criticised the brevity of the notice as far too little recognition for something that had once defined how people found things online.
Context and provenance
A directory was an editorial way to arrange the Web: people decided what belonged where. Search replaced that with ranking by software. The closing is a record of that shift. The article does not give a listing fee, so none is claimed here.
A Yahoo Directory listing is evidence of editorial judgment at a particular date. Use a dated archive capture to show that a site was listed, and name the category. The source here supports the dates and the commentary on the decline; it does not support claims about listing fees or editorial standards.

What remains uncertain
The claim that the directory had been effectively dead for a decade is Sullivan's opinion, reported as such.
