Yahoo Messenger ends, with six months to download chat history

On 8 June 2018 Oath announced that Yahoo Messenger would shut down on 17 July. TechCrunch dated the service's start to 1998, when it debuted as Yahoo Pager. Oath gave no detailed reason; the report put the closing in the context of competition from WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and WeChat, and noted that Oath had shut AOL Instant Messenger the previous October. Users could download their chat history for six months after the shutdown. The files were saved to the user's own device rather than sent to another messaging service. Oath pointed to an invite-only group messaging app called Squirrel, then in testing, though the report observed that no replacement product was yet available. The closing is a small example of how a company can decide what a person may keep. The right was real but narrow: a personal file of one's own side of past chats, for a limited time.

Context and provenance

The six-month window matters because it reaches past the shutdown date. A closing notice that gives a date and a separate download deadline allows two different things to end at two different times. A reader of a notice should record both.

If you cite an exported Yahoo Messenger history, record the date you exported it, the format and whether it covers both sides of the conversation. The source says only that files were saved to the user's device. Whether they are complete, or readable in other software, was not examined here.

Why it matters

Yahoo Messenger's closing combined a short shutdown with a longer, personal-export period that the user had to act on.

What remains uncertain

The company gave no specific reason; the context in the record is the reporter's. Export format and completeness were not tested.
