Yahoo Groups stops showing its archives

In late 2019 Yahoo announced that it would remove most features from Yahoo Groups, including its archived messages and files. Locus Magazine reported that all groups were to close on 21 October and that archived data was to be deleted by 14 December. Search Engine Journal later reported that content stopped being viewable on the web portal at 11:59 pm Pacific on 14 December and that Yahoo would hold deletion until download requests made by 31 January 2020 had been processed. What stood to be lost was a particular kind of record: mailing-list communities of fans, writers, hobbyists and fanzine editors, who had used the Groups archive as their long-term memory. Locus reported that a volunteer Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project had identified almost 30,000 at-risk lists, that Archive Team was uploading lists to the Internet Archive, and that the Organization for Transformative Works, which runs the Archive of Our Own, had called for help. Members could request only their own posted content, and only through the stated process.

Context and provenance

This is the case where the host's tools allowed individuals to take their own posts but not the whole conversation. A thread is a joint work. A member's personal download may omit the replies that give it meaning, which is why the volunteer lists-by-list rescue mattered.

Mailing-list archives are conversations, so a citation should name the list, the thread and the copy. A member's own download contains that member's posts. If you rely on a volunteer rescue, name the project and the date of its copy, and avoid saying a list is lost until you have asked the people who ran it.

Transmission timeline

  1. 2019-10

Yahoo announces the removal of Groups archives; Search Engine Journal says the announcement came in October.

  2. 2019-12-14

Group content stops being viewable on the web portal at 11:59 pm Pacific.

  3. 2020-01-31

Deadline for member requests for their own content; deletion held until requests are processed.

Why it matters

A shutdown can be technically orderly and still erase a community's shared record, because export tools usually serve individuals, not conversations.

What remains uncertain

The two sources describe slightly different stages of the same plan (group closure versus archive deletion). How much of Yahoo Groups was ultimately saved by volunteers is not established by these pages.
